Actually when first announced in 1915 and the date set at 30Jul where it remained until 1938 there was no controversy. It wasn’t till after 1938 and the move to 26 Jan that people became unhappy. Study a bit of Australian history.

@JOHNSMITH-if9jr I have no issue with the referendum result, as you point out the result was quite clear. I merely pointed out historical fact, which you questioned and I proved was correct. If you honestly believe there has been no indigenous protests since 1788 then you are ignorant of our country's history. You can try a read more widely and learn or remain ignorant, doesn't worry me.

Why did they change the original date? When Australia Day was first held it was 1915 and it was on 30 Jul and stayed that way till 1938. Did you study any Australian history at school?

Australia Day has already had a date change, when first announced it was the 30 Jul, it stayed that way till 1938. There wasn’t even organised events till 1949. ANZAC day has a direct relationship to the date as it was the day the 1AIF landed at Gallipoli. Easter always is on different dates and it relates to the cycle of the moon not a specific date. I ignore all religious holidays as I’m sure you do to Ramadan or Hanukkah.

@JColly_ Nope you were referring to Australia Day and the indigenous protests associated with the symbolism that it invokes with colonialism. The date for Australia Day was originally 30 Jul, move it back and remove the controversy.

@JColly_ No you are factually wrong. Australia Day was declared and announced by the Federal government in 1915 and set on the 30Jul as a national day. The indigenous community are asking for a date change to remove that symbolic relationship 26 Jan has to colonialism.
