@VeteranfromOz The largest defence budgets have been under Labor governments the lowest under conservative governments.

@KIA-MIA-POW Well no actually. Prior to WWII the conservative government had run the regular Army down to virtually being non existent. You are correct about forecast spending and actual spending as this depends significantly on how the countries ecomony is going. % of GDP is a rough guide as comparison.

@buildmotosykletist1987 The largest defence budget ever was under Labor in 1943 during WWII at 34% of GDP. The lowest under a conservative Menzies government in 1938 at 1.53%. You haven't a clue what you are talking about.

@buildmotosykletist1987 No you are simply mistaken.

@buildmotosykletist1987 Thankyou for acknowledging the error in your comment and obvious mistake. Your comment about defence spending during the Whitlam government while technically correct lacks any context. There was a worldwide recession. Also on average the Howard government spent less as % of GDP on Defence than the previous Hawke/Keating governments. So you are factually wrong again. Don't take my word for it, research the data yourself.

@buildmotosykletist1987 So twice now you accuse me of lying, for what purpose. The data is the data. I use % of GDP as a comparison. I proved you factually wrong once already. You provide no evidence for your statement and in some cases you are correct, but the generalisation that conservative governments always spend more than Labor governments is demonstratively wrong.

@buildmotosykletist1987 Are you unable to read. I provided the % of GDP spent on defence for two governments one conservative the other a Labor which proved beyond all doubt you actually lied or were mistaken. The budget papers show again beyond all doubt the Howard government spent less on Defence than the Hawke/Keating governments as a % of GDP. Also while defence spending on average was slightly lower under Rudd/Gillard in one budget year it actually spent more than any individual year of the Howard government. Your are just factually wrong. Go and do your own research or provide some data or evidence of your totally baseless claim.

@buildmotosykletist1987 So here are the facts. The two lowest budget years since Whitlam are 2002-03 under Howard at 1.62% of GDP and under Gillard at 1.60 or just .02% lower, however under Labor spending increased to 1.93% in 2009-10 more than the Howard government ever spent. Your generalisation of Defence spending under LNP and Labor governments is just factually wrong. However your short term memory is correct since 2014 the defence budget has increased by approximately 0.2% under the LNP government.
