Smith is an aberration, I did 35 years and the officers and soldiers I served with were outstanding. Journalism is an essential element of a free democracy.

@imxxnsushi Oh yeah the Taliban and Al Qaeda are such clean skins. I mean they never killed any civilians at all. In fact let's check on just how many Afghani farmers the Taliban killed.

@thethirdman225 If you had read my other comment you can see I completely agree with you. Smith was an aberration. The Taliban strapped IEDs to intellectually disabled girls and sent them into markets. The Taliban regularly specifically targeted its own civilians and murdered them in the droves. It was official policy. The Australian government and the ADF explicitly had ROE that did not allow the targeting of civilians. I'm not sure you know what you are talking about.

@thethirdman225 For the 35 years I was a soldier on all operational deployments I served I was issued with ROE and OFOF orders. These OFOF were also issued many times on major exercises and training on cards and you are just factually incorrect on this point. We were regularly trained on the Geneva conventions and the laws of armed conflict. Once again Smith was an aberration, this is not an excuse for his and some others behaviour. We fought an enemy with literally no morals, no dignity and no sense of human empathy. If the Taliban were a body part then the rectum it is.

@thethirdman225 I responded to an absurd comment from Imman Khan, and supported free speech and journalism, at no stage did I support Smiths and others behaviour. The ADF served with distinction, honour, and bravery in Afghanistan. The Taliban are cowards, and I’ll leave it at that.
