The French owned nuclear industry (EDF) is in debt €64billion. Nuclear power in France is heavily subsidised by the French taxpayer that’s why it is able to export power to Europe.

So any molten salt reactor using Thorium can produce U233. It is a difficult process but is achievable. U233 bombs work, as they have been tested. It is not the easiest or cheapest way to make a bomb but again it can be done. If these SMRs can be made commercially viable then there is going to have to be a very strict regulatory controls to prevent weapon proliferation, and that will be very expensive.

@DJ-yj1vg Ontario has significant renewable electrical production. Nuclear supplies only approximately 15%.

@jmcham1000 The nuclear technology used in US submarines and aircraft carriers is not SMR they are miniature PWR and the technology is highly secretive. It will never be shared for commercial use.

@bobthebomb1596 At this stage they don’t even come close.
1
@jmcham1000 Well I would beg to differ. Molten salt and Thorium SMR are significantly different to your standard PWR currently providing electricity to the grid.
1
@jmcham1000 Good point. I was aware of several different designs of SMRs it turns out there are about 50.

Hydrogen when produced by fossil fuel is relatively cheap, but wants the point if you are trying to reduce carbon emissions. If you use green energy then by that point renewable electricity is already cheaper than the hydrogen it is producing. Why would you then use hydrogen?

It will be expensive as you will need strict regulatory controls to prevent weapon proliferation.
