Unfortunately poor Greg has just become a mindless warmonger.

Why would acknowledging the sacrifice indigenous soldiers have given to this country since WWI or the sacrifice they gave prior to Federation during the Frontiers wars disgrace ANZAC day?

@galacticnemesis366 I'm sorry but your reply is nonsensical garbage and clears up nothing. There was no draft or conscription in WWI or WWII and due to a lack of recognition indigenous men were not liable to the conscription of the late 50s and 60s. However indigenous men volunteered in numbers. In 1941 a Torres Strait light infantry battalion was able to be formed. Torres Strait Islander soldiers received a third of the pay of white soldiers. Indigenous soldiers from both WWI and WWII were denied war pensions and membership to RSLs. So don't spread your idiotic crap here.

@user-eq8yf2nd3y Nice racist comment, tell us how you really feel.

In the 2009-10 Labor budget defence spending hit 1.93% of GDP that was higher than any budget under the Howard years. You are factually and demonstrably wrong. Under Howard defence spending got as low as 1.62%, under Labor it hit a low of 1.60%. You need to get your facts straight.
1
@Leftyintollerable Nope factually incorrect and again demonstrably wrong. A Labor government had defence spending at over 30% of GDP in 1941 during WWII after a conservative Menzies government had lowered defence spending to 1.53% in 1938. Just 3 years earlier. You apparently dont know much about Australian history.
1
@userjoe4321 Almost correct, however while it budgeted 1.56% it actually spent 1.6% as I previously acknowledged. The previous LNP government had also lowered its defence spending to 1.62%. Why did you feel the need to point out data I already had highlighted?
1
@userjoe4321 You fail to acknowledge that while Labor did in fact reduce the defence budget during the Rudd/Gillard governments it was at the time dealing with a Global financial crisis that significantly reduced the governments income. The rest of the OCED went into recession, Australia didn’t.
1
@userjoe4321 I could go back through 9 years of Abbott, Turnbull, and Morrison governments disastrous defence decisions and suggest it is possible Labor could do better. They have committed the money, maybe not fast enough or to some peoples liking, but the money is on the table. It is just partisan political garbage to suggest Labor don’t care deeply for the defence of this country as do the Libs and Nationals. They may have slightly different policies however there is general agreement. Even the opposition Defence spokespersons only real criticism was the timeline of spending and he was unable to provide any positive criticism.

@buildmotosykletist1987 I certainly consider Greg’s opinion, and as a Foreign editor on international politics he is very good, but once he strays into his god bothering and clearly uninformed opinions on Defence his views are extreme and nonsensical. You have a strange idea of the truth if that’s what you consider comes out of Sheridan gob. If you seriously think Sheridans opinion is truth then you to are a zealot. A mature fact based discussion is impossible.
1
@buildmotosykletist1987 Well the SR clearly identified a change in priorities for the allocation of resources and unfortunately the Army has lost some capability and the Navy will gain some capability. The defence budget is increasing. Is it enough ? I personally think they could spend a bit more, however there is a $890billion national debt that needs to be considered. If we are smart there are defence measures we can deploy that we don’t need to pay for, ie it is my understanding a THAAD system could be deployed in the top end of Australia by the US in 5 days.
1
@johnwebber4358 So you just compared Greg Sheridan to Winston Churchill, after I got up of the floor from coughing up a lung in laughter I thought yeah no hyperbole there.
1
@buildmotosykletist1987 Nope wrong again. The 24/25 budget has defence spending at just over 2% of GDP or $53billion, $5.7billion more than the last budget and more than the previous LNP had budgeted.
1
@buildmotosykletist1987 No because it’s only April. A yearly budget is for 12 months, there is two more months of Defence spending.
