  1. I understand it was a different time, but we managed to defend Australia from the Japanese in WWII without a RAN submarine element. Using your imagination there are other ways to defend Australia or project force, panicking now about a couple of hiccups in the procurement of the next generation subs will not help. We can extend the LOT of the Collins and extend the capabilities of the surface fleet and air elements, the solutions are endless.

  2. When Australia purchased the Oberon class subs we learned that because they were not made in Australia all the maintenance and upgrades meant the subs had to trainsit back to the UK. So when it came time to to replace them we chose to build them here. There a huge strategic advantages in being able to maintain your own sub fleet in your own country. It is simply not about the best weapon.

  6.  @gregaussie5254  Best be careful before accusing me of not knowing Australian military history. Hint you won't find an Aussie sub. Late in the war we got an old Dutch sub we used for training, that's it.

  7.  @gregaussie5254  Yes, American subs based some of their ops out of Australian ports and could easily do so again in any future conflict, hence my previous point was spot on, and based on an accurate understanding of naval warfare in WWII.

  9.  @brettmitchell5229  Yes, thanks for agreeing to my point made previously. In WWII the Japanese navy completely outclassed our Navy and what we did very cleverly is got the Americans to help us. There is a famous speech Curtin gave. Currently there is nothing and I mean nothing we can do to match the Chinese Navy, but if we a clever we will use US military strength again to protect us. Anyone else got a better idea?
