You completely misunderstand the term sovereignty and the legal aspects.

Why would there be a backlash?

@matthewmichaels5522 That doesn't explain why there should be or could be a backlash either if or if not a constitutional voice gets a yes vote in the referendum. If a yes vote gets up then the minority accept the will of the people and get on. If a no vote wins will then the indigenous community will have to accept the country wasn't ready to give them a fair go.

@matthewmichaels5522 Well I can only go by the data and the data is overwhelming clear. As a ethnic/cultural group indigenous people on average have worse health outcomes, live significantly shorter lives, receive less education, have worse housing and employment outcomes than the general population. Numerous closing the gap reports to government confirm this as do numerous surveys and studies. The only thing indigenous people lead on is arrests for criminal behaviour and gaol sentencing and rates of incarceration. In WA the arrest rate for driving offences has been proven demonstratively to be discriminatory.

@dfor50 We will have to.

@peterpiper831 I provided accurate independent data. All you have provided is personal opinion and everyone has one of those as the saying goes.

@peterpiper831 The average life span of an indigenous Australian is 10 years below that of the national average. If you don’t consider that as unfair then basic human empathy is beyond you.

@cozzazee4043 Nice passion but factually wrong on a major point. It is only through the western democratic and legal process that the indigenous community have been able to find a voice and express their opinion. Unfortunately western technology just totally overwhelmed indigenous culture, that's just factual history. Hopefully a voice and treaty will get up and some balance restored.

@johngeier8692 In exactly the same way that the problem with white supremacists is their brain or lack of brain activity.

@benjigray8690 A rambling response to my precise comment on indigenous disadvantages. I’m not sure what your point is. How is personally experiencing indigenous lifestyle going to increase their average lifespan 10 years so it is the same as the general population? I did live in Darwin for 10 years and my job did take me to some remote communities, so what, it certainly didn’t improve their education, health, or employment outcomes.

@JC-lu4se OK you say that. But a study by the WA traffic authority and WA police found that when driving offences attributed to cameras was compared to WA police officers conducting traffic offences. Indigenous people committed driving offences exactly to the proportion of the population. If a cop pulled them over they were 7 times more likely to get a ticket. Clear evidence you entire comment is factually wrong.
