The reason why our fertility rate has dropped significantly since a high in the late fifties are wide and various. Housing affordability is certainly one factor but also women gaining control of their bodies, increased education of girls and women, more women joining the workforce for better wages, the list goes on. Currently and don't quote me but it is around 1.4 which means we are slowly dying out.

@andrewbroome7404 The single greatest effect to reducing fertility in Australia was the availability of the birth control pill in the early sixties. Sorry but you can graph it clearly. Certainly as you said housing affordability is a factor but only in certain markets, the drop in fertility is directly related to the introduction of the birth control pill.

It isn’t stable, birth rates have been well below the required 2.1 just to maintain the population level.

@andrewbroome7404 I don't necessarily agree fully with you but certainly governments can implement policies to make it easier to have children, tax incentives, remember the baby bonus
