If we need workers to pick fruit, then what is the issue in granting visas to South Pacific Islanders to do it, it’s a win win situation.

Too be fair Littleproud worked in Agricultural finance before becoming a pollie so he would have some understanding of farming.

@Nat Smythe I not going to defend Littleproud, but he is the Deputy leader of the Nats and Agriculture minister. Jeez if you are on the land and your opinion is widespread the government is in real trouble in three weeks.

Yep the Liberals know exactly how to treat women in their party with respect, just ask Julia Banks, Julie Bishop, Linda Reynolds, Lucy Gichuhi, and Brittany Higgins. A study published in the Australian Journal of Social Issues proves it.

No Matt is for his family’s personal interest in coal mining.

@Aussieboy329 No just his own personal interest.

@brettmitchell74 Well they are only here because farmers can't get the workers in Australia. Yes it is low paid hard physical work, but I wouldn't describe them as scabs.

@brettmitchell74 I totally agree with you about award wages and the fruit picking sector has a long history of paying on productivity and employing international backpackers and providing sub standard conditions, so you have me there. Recently though the AWU appealed a FWC ruling and we now have a minimum wage of $25.41 an hour for the horticultural sector, so that issue has been fixed. I certainly agree with you the horticultural industry has a proven history of underpaying and sub standard conditions of employment to international backpackers and South Pacific islanders. We will all notice the increase in fruit and vegetable prices and while not solely a factor of increased wages it has contributed.

@bretloyd8097 You obviously have a very poor opinion of our horticultural industry.

@bretloyd8097 Fair point, perhaps i am being a bit optimistic.
1
@brettmitchell74 All good and fair points. I think though you are being overly optimistic about your ideas in attracting sufficient domestic workers.
1
@brettmitchell74 Yeah I have no problems with incentives to provide fruit pickers with decent wages and conditions, it is a shit of a job.
