@OzVeteran1969 Don't get me wrong I agree with you the Australian voting system like anything else probably does need a look at and any suggested improvements voted on. I personally think we have a pretty robust democracy compared to most of the world. In my opinion Lidia Thorpe was a mistake, but that can be fixed at the next election.

Lidia Thorpe is a elected politician to the Senate and represents her party and state, these are the people she is responsible to, not the indigenous community. Like so many others you confuse political representation with a constitutional voice.

@OzVeteran1969 Actually the Federal senate use a proportional voting system. No preference voting at all.

@scottmorrison.1668 OK so you’re not the real Tony Abbott as he would have to much class to make a crass comment like that, and I’m no fan of Lidia Thorpe.
1
@OzVeteran1969 Well no, proportional voting is actually fundamentally different to preferential voting. You are just wrong and need to express your view/opinion so that it makes sense.
1
@scottmorrison.1668 Is this the real Tony Abbott? I just ask as you have used his picture.

@OzVeteran1969 Funny you should include military and I'm not necessarily disagreeing with it was just I was a soldier for 35 years and am keenly interested in politics and think my life experience is a plus. And funny I mean funny haha not funny weird. Not sure about first past the post voting, but I agree with your other points.
1
@ozmaniac49 Yes I get your point, however I believe compulsory voting helps to engage everyone in the political system. It also helps negate the nutjob extremes on both the left and right.

Come on, how many One Notion Senators have been elected and then found out to have been as dodgy as a Parramatta rd used car salesman.

Sadly Martin has no criminal convictions so you point is mute.

@nettles6055 I am not defending Ms Thorpe who in my opinion is a poor representative of her party and state. I make no comment on her ability to represent her life experiences. What I pointed out was this continuing misconception by yourself and others that an elected politician of any party is ever elected to represent in parliament exclusively one particular group. Ms Thorpe does not represent indigenous people in the Australian parliament. She represents the Greens and her state in the Senate. She may bring her experiences as an aboriginal woman to the parliament but she doesn't represent aboriginal women. This is why political representation and a constitutional voice are different.
1
Actually the purpose of the Senate is to represent the states hence the unequal representation afforded to WA, SA, Tas, and Queensland.
1
You fundamentally misunderstand the difference between political representation and a constitutional voice. They are not the same.

I’m no fan of Lidia Thorpe but could you enlighten me as to what crime she has committed. Don’t get me wrong I be first there with the hand cuffs, just let me know what the charge will be.
