Good question. I will go ANZAC day without a thought, I reckon most people would.

Exactly how many indigenous Australian do you think are currently living in the Stone Age? Just in round numbers will do.
2
Actually technically speaking the First Fleet arrived in Australia on the 18th January 1788. So you haven’t even got that right. Did you do any Australian history in school?
2
@nathantudor5763 Australia day didn’t even exist till 1935 so what country did our ANZACs die for in WWI?
2
@polarbear7255 That's not the question. If you had to choose which would you keep? Don't be a snowflake make a decision. Australia day (start 1935) ANZAC day (start 1916)
2
Perhaps we could combine them both and call it Empire Day and use the Kings birthday as the date or maybe move Australia day back to its original date July 30. The options are endless.

@adamparker4585 You have my vote.

@billo47 So what was the point of the comment. Do indigenous people constantly approach you and express a desire to live like we all did 10000 years ago?
1
@AshleyJOsborne No. As I just proved any date can be used it is completely subjective. Jan 26 is a symbolic date, it could be easily moved to 1 Jan and be called Federation day.
1
In actual fact the original date and till 1935 Australia day was held on 30 July. That date change in 1935 was the subject of protest and controversy.
1
@AshleyJOsborne Well you say there is no need, many disagree as they feel no relevance to the date whatsoever and others who actually find the date quite distressing for a celebration. There is literally nothing in the history of Australia Day that links in permanently to a date or event. What is it that you find so offensive about the idea of attempting to find a harmonious date that all Australians can enjoy?
1
@JC-lu4se The 26 Jan is symbolic and the protest about Australia day’s date is the association it has with British colonialism. So the protest is not irrelevant. Finding an agreeable date would certainly be problematic but I would like to think a mature discussion could take place.
1
@JC-lu4se That was my point. Jan 26 is associated with colonialism. Yes people will protest anything, but a more appropriate date surely could be found to celebrate a national day.
1
@Design_no So the date for Australia Day was originally 30 July, it didn’t move to the 26 Jan until 1935 and was protested at that time for being too Sydney centric. It’s only been a public holiday since 1996. Your chutzpah is impressive. There is nothing divisive about debate unless poor little snookems isn’t getting your way. Don’t be such a snowflake.
1
@AshleyJOsborne That is a shockingly ignorant statement. It denies tens of thousands of years of indigenous history and culture, and there's the problem. I once thought 1 Jan as Federation day would be appropriate until I learned indigenous Australians were denied any say in federation and played no role in any of the discussions, debates, and referendums. So thats out. Instead of me picking a date why don't we ask the indigenous community for their ideas, oh wait we denied them a voice, so just let a white privileged bloke like myself decide. Let's go back to Empire day and celebrate the Kings Birthday.
1
@AshleyJOsborne Oops sorry about that, I replied to you instead of JC-lu4se. My bad. I would suggest a new date for a truly national day of celebration should include discussions with the indigenous community. Bugger we denied them an opinion. I'll go with the original date of Australia day 30 July. Oops my bad again you are one and the same.
1
@AshleyJOsborne I assumed nothing you could be a 13 year old catholic school boy or a 50 year old Asian woman for all I know. Did I say something to suggest you were indigenous, if so I didn't mean to?
1
OMG seriously prior to 1935 there was no such thing as Australia Day so fuck knows what country our soldiers fought for in WWI. The level of ignorance around Australia Day is astonishing. Pick a day ANZAC or Australia, not some half arsed excuse to go all woke like a snowflake.
1
@macca9392 No snowflakery allowed. Make a D.
1
@adamparker4585 There are serious implications in moving Australia Day out of summer. Firstly and most importantly the test match, we can’t have an Australia Day test match in the middle of winter, and most Australians enjoy a summer BBQ to a winter soup.
1
@blackorchid2180 Happy to be fact checked here, but I know of no large organised protests on ANZAC day by anyone.

Why not the US?
