How much consultation was sort from the indigenous population when our constitution was written?

@brettmitchell6431 I have no guilt, I have done nothing even remotely wrong that would invoke that emotion. Why would you even suggest such a strange unrelated concept. The indigenous community had an extensive consultation period and presented the Australian community with the “Uluṟu statement from the heart” it seems only reasonable to put this proposition to the people. A voice to government is not a third chamber it is merely an advisory body, it will have no veto powers or be able to enact legislation. It is nothing to be fearful of.

@Jonquil Do you really want me to run through the process the individual colonies went through to begin negotiations to nationhood and our own constitution. What were you doing during the “federation” part of history at school?
1
@Jonquil So off the top of my head beginning around 1885 for various reasons the 6 colonies realised there were efficiencies to be made with a federal government and around 1890 debates, consultations, and conventions started which culminated in referendums and votes were taken. Throughout this process indigenous people were not even considered citizens and hence were denied a vote. I have no idea what all that other stuff was in your comment just white noise as far as I can see. Constitutional recognition is what is required to fix that injustice 122 years ago. It has nothing to do with you being pissed off about some perceived issues with the welfare system.

@brettmitchell6431 You completely missed the point. It was what the indigenous community asked for. The indigenous community don’t think constitutional recognition is virtue signalling.
1
@brettmitchell6431 You just didn't understand a thing I said or the pointed problems inherent in our constitution or are being wilfully ignorant. Best we leave it there.

@infidel202 No I asked a question. I ran away from nothing. Tell me what is the truth?
1
@infidel202 So I’m not sure on your point or what truth you are talking about. Here in Australia when we became a country the legally entitled owners of the land were not consulted or engaged in any manner. In 1901 the colonies federated under a constitution that specifically left out the indigenous owners of the country. We now have an opportunity to fix that injustice. Constitutional recognition, a voice to parliament, and a truth commission. If you are so concerned about the truth why would you not support a truth commission?

@brettmitchell6431 "Terra nullius" and a high court 6 to 1 Mabo decision just make your claim in reality, factually incorrect. Also in reality the governments of the US managed to negotiate seperate treaties with numerous native Indian tribes with diverse cultures and languages. So again factually incorrect. If it could be done in the US then it could have been done here. Difficult maybe, but certainly possible. So both your arguments quashed. Next?
1
@brettmitchell6431 Yes I understand you wish you could re-write history, but you can’t and the reality is not what you think it is. You are just factually wrong. You have your opinion which is fine, it is just wrong. Even your description of the High court 1992 Mabo decision is wrong, as native title has its basis in Australian/English common law. You may not agree with it, but your opinion is worthless in this regard. I reckon George Pell was definitely guilty but where is he now? that’s just reality. There are many instances in the Americas and other countries where colonial powers negotiated treaties with indigenous tribes/mobs. It was not impossible, you just wish it was. Again you are just historically factually incorrect. I agree with you in one respect it would have been a lot easier if we had of declared war, and then declared victory, but we didn’t. We used a dodgy law and got caught out. The ultra right facists in this country who seem to think brute force is how you get your way and want to throw out the norms and systems of our wonderful parliamentary democracy and its separation of powers, that make this country a beacon of freedom in the world, these are the nut jobs who should be made to attend counselling and behavioural management courses so they can become useful Australians.
