I read Pascoe's book and it didn't seem right to me. It did however show some aspects of Aboriginal culture that are significantly more complex than how it was taught to me at school in the 60s. Also there is definitely on some levels a certain amount of racism in the criticism. I think Pascoe probably had good intentions in starting a discussion but just went the wrong way about doing it.

A DNA test can't show aboriginal identity.

@keithc904 No this is a common misperception. A DNA test can give a rough guide to ethnicity but can't tell if individuals are related, unless you also test every single Bunurong person, which in a free and open liberal democracy isn't the way we do things. These DNA tests for ethnicity rely on a huge data base and at the moment it is not large enough to give a clear guide to aboriginality.

@keithc904 Considering on absolutely every type of measure be economic, health, educational, social, the indigenous population of this country lag behind the average, where do you imagine this free money is rolling in from? Clearly any welfare payments have made no difference, and granted there are some specificity targeted assistance for aborigines due to the fact they are so behind the rest of us, why is that so bad? Don't say level playing field because every statistic without exception says ingenious people are far worse off than the average person.
