  1. A lot of people miss the point on why he went to Brasil. It wasn't simply "run away! run away!". I've heard comments on how other kings of other nations "stood and fought". Well... they lost . By moving to Brasil, he denied Napoleon a legal surrender and transfer of power (like all those other kings were forced to do) and left Portugal open to continue it's alliance to the UK, as well as oficial(ish) resistance in other areas of the country. The Czar of Russia followed the same tactic (avoid capture to avoid capitulation) in 1812.
