I have to say I don't really agree with the assessement of Belisarius as a "greedy general"; afaik, he was following Justinian's own orders (stupid orders...) to reconquer Rome, and was doing it with a tiny, undersupported army. You can't simply disengage and rush back out of such an ofensive, just because "it's an order!". Specially from that distance, and over water.
