High speed aircraft doing gun runs... it's more dangerous and dificult than it looks, one mistake and you slam into the ground. And each F-4 had one gun. An F-5, with 2 guns, would have had better luck.

@khangphan5174 there's another problem to add. If they fired at helis close to the ground (or landed) there's a good chance these older models of Sidewinder being completely confused by the massive heat coming from the ground, blocking their receivers.

@hailexiao2770 I know, but two guns would have achieved a greater spread of fire on a single pass, rather than one single neat line of rounds.
