  1. Many people from the mountain regions came originally from Ireland and the border region of England/Scotland. There is an excellent book called "Albion's Seed" which describes the roots of many American Folkways.

  2. As a man who turned 19 in 1971 you can be sure I paid very close to all these events. I am surprised that I have no contemporary memory of this documentary. In 1964 many ( possibly all) of these men will have enlisted rather than been drafted. Later films concerning the war will have draftees, more or less unwilling soldiers. I was spared this conflict by a lucky draft lottery number. I would have gone if called, but was glad I wasn't called.
