Its a mistake to think Ambrose was writing history as an objective portrayal of those events. The book, and the TV show was about the men of easy company and how they experienced the war. No soldier in war ever knows the whole story. But they all remember how they felt as they endured the conflict, and that is the story told in Band of Brothers. The story about Compton at Bastogne is a case in point. The story illustrates how different men respond to extreme, continuing danger. Some become alcoholics, some morphine addicts, some hide, and some break down. Some freeze, and some run to danger. The soldiers remember it differently, and report different facts that confirm their opinion.
