L Dikx Not fully serios, but you do realize that Napoleon was a corsican, which is italian culture, and that Corsica was only recently occupied and not even properly annexed by France when Napoleon was born ? Napoleon's father was from Tuscany and his mother was genoese. His primary languages were corsican and italian and only at the age of 9 or 10 he learnt french. Not to mention that his family actually fought agaisnt the french, trying to maintain Corsica independent. In others words, he's not that much french in origin. Which explains his military prowess :P

@flamingoxe5984 Yeah... uhm, no. Technically it was conquered, and annexed in 1769 (months before Napoleon's birth) after the french troops defeated the corsican republic troops, but wasn't actually (truly) annexed until 1789. In those 20 years it was more or less just occupied. Napoleon's father and Napoleon himself in the early days were coriscan nationalists. Even if technically he was born in the Kingdom of France he has 0% french heritage. He is as french as an austrian who gets french citizenship. It's that simple. Read a bit about it.

Let me give a quote from Wikipedia: "Napoleon's parents joined the Corsican resistance and fought against the French to maintain independence, even when Maria was pregnant with him." That is from the Early Life paragraph on Napoleon's wiki page. I don't have the expertise to dispute what's there. It does say in the his father's wiki that he eventually embraced the french goverment. Also, Napoleon learnt french starting at 10 years old. It wasn't his father who teach him french. I don't know where you got that "speaking french at home" and I doubt the value of it if it's late in their lives. Also, Napoleon said that he was more influenced by his mother. I do admit that going to a french school from age of 9 is a pretty good way of learning early enough the french values and culture (though he never learnt to spell right or to speak quickly in french). In the end, is that enough to make him french ? I'd say not. But how much french ? 70% ? 50% ? 30% ? That's a topic of endless debate. I'd say that he has strong italian roots, and not truly fully french, and that it wouldn't have become the same person if he was born and raised in mainland France by a french family.

@11Survivor The context I put it in, is about the culture, the people's ways, tranditions, values, beliefs. In that regard, Napoleon was born and raised effectively as corsican (italian). Him being french is basically the same as someone being born in Germany, emigrating to France, getting his citizenship and then saying that he's french. Yeah, he has the documents, but the region he was born and raised into wasn't converted to french culture yet. If France conquers Corsica today, that doesn't mean that suddenly tomorrow everybody in Corsica speaks and understands french and they all raise their pinky finger when drinking from a teacup. These take at least one generation to have a meaningful change.
