So many people focus on the resolution when it comes to VR. The resolution just a part in what VR needs to be massively successful, and I think it's the closest to being where it should be. Another thing that it needs is better rendering frequency/refresh rate. That will help with people that get nauseous when playing, and there's still a good bunch of them. Totally out of my ass, but I think it needs to be something like 300Hz to be really effective.
Like ca1ib0s said, it also needs 140ยบ FOV. Variable Focus. Eye Tracking with Foveated Rendering. I'd say especially eye tracking. And what Luke said about more tracking in general, so it's not just your eyes that are in the game. Though what we have now is enough tracking-wise for cockpit games.
Ultimately VR is an immesion tool. It does enhance immersion, but it also breaks it now, in several ways/points. When these are fixed, and the second generation of hardware&software come for that, it will good&cheap enough to really get big. And it's A LOT of work. HUGE amounts of work, both for hardware and software, to have what I've said above. Not just the graphic card able to run 4 - 2x16K at 120 - 300Hz, but also in the gaming technology to take into account all the trackings. In mere miliseconds. I'd say we're still like 10 years distance to that.
On the bright side I have about 10 years in which I'll still be able to be productive & helpful to this world. Thank God there still isn't 16K VR porn.
