If it's night, and there are signs the driver is impaired or driving erratically, I think it's reasonable to tell the driver to turn the car off and put the keys on top of the car, before the cop exits their vehicle to approach. Might have less fleeing and alluding, or risk damage to other vehicles, etc. But I'm no law expert. Just a thought.
