I think we can sense intelligence. A good example is a super engaging neighbor girl. She's maybe 11 by now, but I always have conversations with her that could be expected from someone twice her age. She's home schooled, btw.

@Matortheeternal Yes to that. But I'm going deeper, with expression responses, rates and type complexity, along with body language, all the nonverbal stuff. Then the chemistry of what another brings out in yourself. You know when you are digging deeper. Then the energy level afterward- is the conversation worth repeating to someone else? Her cookies include the recipe, the cooking process and screw-ups, and history of the cookie type. At times she can be intimidating, and she's not even trying to be, she's usually laughing at something.
