The US had no collective interest in going back to the moon until the Chinese disclosed their interest in establishing a moon base. Near total lack of a cohesive cultural identity makes the US dependent on the social goals of other countries.

@codymoe4986 Why did the Obama administration start the asteroid capture program instead of planning for revisiting the moon, as suggested by the Bush administration? Because, the country basically said back then, 'been there, done that'. Then there is the entire rest of 20th century to answer for.
