@silverjourney1 they didn't defeat Napoleon because I don't think he had any intention to keep them. Napoleon had a counter offensive against the Empires which tried to annihilate the French Revolution. He only pushed them back to Moscow and painfully returned back home.

@KazeHorse when they were at your door... Do you realize what it means a Paris - Moscow campaign? Logistics at that time? It is unique in the human history. And compared with the WWII. Can you do something like this today?

@KazeHorse what is important in your observation is that the Russians managed to never sign a capitulation even when they had an important (European) territory under the adversary 's occupation. It is also perhaps an unique performance in the human history. The other side is the reiteration of the fact that a war has two major components : a military one and a diplomacy one. A war won or lost on the battlefields had the opposite result in the peace treaties, lost or won by the diplomacy.
