Incorrect. What you are observing, the visual plasma, is perfectly normal for a shuttle reentry.

It wasn't due to a tile falling off - it was a piece of double layer insulating foam that broke free during launch from around the forward attachment pod strut and struck the leading edge of the left wing. The damage allowed superheated plasma during re-entry to burn a hole in the wing and subsequent aerodynamic forces acting on the cavity caused the orbiter to yaw to the right, exposing its underside to extreme aerodynamic forces whereupon it disintegrated. Although they would have experienced the initial loss of control. beyond that and seconds later, the crew would have known very little about it.

No they didn't. The crew had no idea of the extent of the damage to the left wing and neither did NASA.
