If sufficient quantities of sulphur dioxide are sent into the stratosphere, which then oxidise to form sulphate aerosols, they can start to exert a cooling influence on global temperatures. There was a VEI 5/6 eruption of Shiveluch in I think 2019 from memory, which caused huge stratospheric injection - alone lofting some 768Gg of sulphate mass up to 12 miles into the atmosphere. This event looks to be larger - possibly the largest recorded of this volcano in the satellite era.
