  1. No, he was after record producer and sone of Doris Day,Terry Melcher who he felt had unfairly spurned him. Melcher had unbeknown to Manson rented the property out to the Polanskis. Manson had even previously visited the house, staking it out with Nancy Pitman and looking for Melcher. Steve McQueen would have also been there on the night of the 8th were it not for the fact that his mistress persuaded him to spend an intimate evening at home with her instead.
