Weight and reentry.

SRBs will also be used on the SLS.

Unfortunately the segmentation is necessary in order to 'throttle' the ascent.

Columbia did not 'blow up'.

@EvilJ069 It certainly didn't as you say "blow up". The piece of double layer insulating foam that broke free during launch from around the forward attachment pod strut and struck the leading edge of the left wing then allowed superheated plasma during re-entry to burn a hole in and enter the structure itself. Subsequent aerodynamic forces acting on the cavity caused the orbiter to yaw to the right. Additional elevon motion was commanded by the flight control system to counteract left side drag. The drag was trying to roll the vehicle to the left, while the flight control system was commanding the elevons to roll it back to the right. The rate of left roll was beginning to overpower the elevons, so the control system fired two 870-lb.-thrust right yaw RCS thrusters to help maintain the proper flight path angle but it was in vain. Seconds later the extreme aerodynamic forces exposed to the underside caused it to shear off the wing and tumble end over and ultimately disintegrate. At mach 18.3 and 39 miles high, the orbiter was quite literally ripped apart. And no it wasn't graceful and yes, with the temperature of reentry, there was indeed as you flippantly add, a 'fireworks show'.
