  3. It was impossible to reach the ISS. Columbia was flying in an orbit that was about 100 miles lower than the station, with a completely different orbital inclination (39 degrees vs. 51 degrees) to the ISS. Additionally, Columbia didn't have the equipment to dock with the space station.
