Abused people abuse people, mostly their children and your hyper-capitalist society abuses children in a thousand ways Where I live putting your toddler in child care with strangers is basically considered child abuse - so women get 2 years maternity leave. When they come home from school the old people look after them till you get home from work. Even if you magically restructure your society today, the messed-up kids of today will mess up their kids, as you say it will take literal generations.

  3.  @autohmae  - That's why I sell enough books to make a living and I'm guessing you don't :-) Actually, I was going to change it to "In a capitalist society, you literally have to pay companies to do the right thing" cos that's technically what I meant but it does not read as well and its not true you have to pay people, most people do the right thing most of the time for social conformity and personal ethics. Jailing them almost never figures into this, it's not a deterrent. Weirdly enough I was researching policing in medieval times 2 weeks ago, which lead me to research policing in modern times and OMG what a joke that is...
