@DaDunge - Relying on Russia for gas was a dumb move after they turned the supply of to Ukrain all those years ago and people froze to death. I mean we all know why it was done - greed. Too many people making too much money of the deals...

When Trump is right about your energy decisions - that should be a massive RED FLAG...

I think your analysis is lightly skewed. I dont think Europe has relied on the US for protection. I think Europe has wrongly [and corruptly][ believed they didn't need protection... In the USA the corruption revolves around supplying insane amounts of military equipment. In Europe it surrounds energy. Too many people were making too much money and that blinkered people's view of reality. To admit you need help from America is to admit there is a threat - admit there is a threat and you have to stop using that ultra profitable cheap Russian gas...!!! Good old fashioned greed is at the heart of this.

@f.a.6975 - OH America's "help" has always been America helping its self. There is a very strong case to be made that America was nothing but a war profiteer in WW2. If you did into it and read "The Downing Street Diaries" of Churchill's private secretary in WW2 - the USA would ONLY accept gold in payment for weapons cos they expected Britain to lose and the £GBP would be worthless... And they had NO intention of intervening to make sure the UK didnt lose. The cabinet had drawn up plans to requisition every piece of gold in the country - including wedding rings - to pay the Americans. It was only Germany declaring war on the USA 6 days after P/Harbour that prevented this. The rebuilding of Europe - the USA gave billions of $ to the countries of Europe to rebuild, but you could NOT spend those $ with each other, they HAD to be spent on goods manufactured in the USA. So it was NOT a gift of billions to Europe so much as a gift of billions fo the US economy. The UK finished paying off its war debt to the USA on 31 December 2006... Very far from the American Hollywood image of the events thats for sure. Its all very double-edged American aid.

@apfeltpunkt2053 - QUOTE " It was until ca. 2005 that as a German you couldn't visit other countries without being commented as being from Nazi-Land somehow and it has still been the conception we (yes, I'm german) would be an agressive nation. I'm a bit surprised that now it feels like internationally everyone is like: "finally, Germany! We always told you to get a strong military!" This is so true. If Germany had armed up to 2% or 3% of GDP in 2000 the world would have had a seizure... QUOTE "Your idea of freedom is more of a folklore" You only have to keep banging on about freedom if you are trying to convince someone they have it - Like Boris Johnson banging on about "world beating" and "leading the world" to distract from doing NOTHING QUOTE " Your political system gave the world a senile president following a crazy stupid senile president. The US is dishonest to itself. If you want to stay as relevant as today in this world you better don't implode from the inside." this si the subject of my next book "How to cope in a collapsing society" and the USA is collapsing. This is the list of contributing factors to societal collapse: Plague / disease Y Environmental change Y Massive wealth inequality Y Loss of the administrative class Y The government stops governing Y Attack from the outside - now includes cyber attack Y Loss of faith in the political system Y Economic collapse Y Exposed obvious corruption Y Crumbling infrastructure Y Mismanagement of a crisis Y Societal division Y Loss of belief in the unity of the society Y Restriction of international trade / loss of trade agreements Y Increased isolationism Y Rising internal violence Y Excessive spending on military / arms race Y Inability to maintain the currency - hoarding / devaluation / hyper inflation Y If a majority of things on the list happen to a civilisation simultaneously, it is invariably the end for that civilisation. If all happen at the same time, it's guaranteed to be the end. The USSR collapsed with 9 out of the 18. America scores 18/18. And you have reached "cascading interconnected systems failure" - everything is broken and everything you need to fix it is also broken.

@francoislechanceux5818 - OH boo hoo poor little France who fought SO valiantly in two world wars... Never relying on others to fight for it or to protect it... Of all countries on earth that should be silent on this subject - ITS THE FRENCH. France's opinion on military self-reliance can be filed in the same section of the library as the "Pripyat Peoples Book Of Nuclear Safty Tips" or the "British Book On Coping Well Without an Empire" QUOTE " In France, we hardly contained our anger over Germany conveniently hiding..." You managed to contain your anger over them invading in 1940.

@diddlypoop - Well it very clearly DID NOT come as a surprise or "news" to me did it dumb dumb, I'm the one who said it. I've known it since 1986 when I was 16 and read the dowing street diaries. What annoys me intensely is the vast percentage of Americans who believe their country is wonderfully philanthropic and went around the world being generous to people and helping them in "the war". What also annoys me intensely is the arrogance of Americans like yourself who wish to lecture me on history as if Im the dummy here...
