My friend lives in Utah for her job at a hospital there. She is mandated BY LAW to have a lawn and to have sprinklers to keep it green and lush - which she does not want. She wants desert plants. This is the best bit - this is so American. She is not ALLOWED to cut her own grass she has to pay the approved contractor that belongs to the housing developer to cut her grass... What a f-ked up messed up country. BTW - its not filling the pools thats the problem cos that's a one-off thing - its that they dont have pool covers on them to stop evaporation cos its "inconvenient" to have to remove it when you want to use it.

@mthompson0331 - She is IT director for the hospital so its NOT a financial problem. But not being a total arse she wanted to make the garden location appropriate to help with the water problem. Id absolutely get surprised by a HOA thing cos I live in Europe and we don't have them THANK GOD. Just another thing that makes me laugh when Americans tell me how they have "FREEDOM" My neighbour is literally distilling whisky in his garden as I type this - that's legal here the ATF won't be around to arrest him LOL. But it might explode cos that happens a lot - hehehehe

@lir3379 - OH RIGHt - that would make sense cos she is the only one that does not want expensive perfect flat grass so she has no neighbours who wish to challenge this Despite being on a simply unbelievable salary my friend is VERY left-wing progressive. Most of the people in her area care infinitely more about their image and status than the environment, she is somewhat shunned by the rest of them.

@Lauradicus - She is installing 7.2Kwh solar, rain harvesting system, using water harvesting system and appropriate gardening for the environment and to hell with the consequences. She is very fortunate that she is quite wealthy but lives in a relatively modest house so she can afford to do the work and fight the court case if it comes to it.

@michaelfrench3396 - None of that is in debate. The issue in debate is the city are saying "YOU MUST SAVE WATER RIGHT NOW" my friend wants to - and the HOA are threatening to sue her if she does. Which is insanity. We dont have HOA's over in Europe - that I am aware of - thank GOD. Why would you want every house to look identical - personally I think it looks terrible. The building codes in the USA mean every house is a massive 2 car garage with a house tacked on the back left corner of it. As a European, I simply can not understand this.

@fiveoctaves - well this is really complicated. In America you keep cattle in feed stalls - we don't do this in Europe. Out cows eat grass so on all environmental issues out cows are not a huge problem.

@mnomadvfx - HAHAHHAHAHA that is so so funny. NO. She moved to form a house on the shaws of Lake Michigan with 17 acres of private beach for this job - it's up for sale at the moment $850k, you can search for it. She does not like it and has kept the other house on as long as she can but... She has 3 more years on this contract then she will move location.
