I DON'T BELIEVE YOU ARE CORRECT this is the development of the undershit as distinct to the "T-Shirt" the T Shirt is a KIMONO...!!! The idea of a garment that was not tailored to fit the user was new to the West and was seen by the US Navy in the 1890's. Previously they had tailored shirts. The US Navy adopted and adapted the Kimono design concept for the sailors to dramatically cut costs in uniform. The concept of a "Block Pattern" was thus born, a scalable design of standard increments in clothing size and this is where the start of the ready to wear pre sized garments came from that led ot the boom in RTW clothing in the 1920's and 30's. The garment you are talking about is a TIGHT fitting garment worn next to the skin, not a loose T Shirt. this developed separately and bifurcated into the undershirt of today - it is longer and tighter then the T Shirt, it has longer sleeves and a smaller collar and cuff. It usually has a V neck whereas a T Shirt traditionally has a crew neck. I am a tailor of bespoke men's historical suits 1890 to 1940 and I read MANY period tailoring books, the development of the block pattern and its connection to the Kimono and the T Shirt is in J P Thornrtons book of 1900.

@TheHistoryGuyChannel If I get time I will photograph the pages of the 1900 J P Thornton book in question and email them to you. "The shirts worn by Brando and Dean were literally undershirts, and it was undershirts that became outwear." YES but that was in the 1950's they were wearing undershirts as T Shirts. The US Navy had separately started producing t-shirts for sailors in the 1890's in very limited numbers and I believe as standard issue by 1918 I believe. So you have a twin track evolution - which I admit got completely interchangeable by late 1950. But my contention is the T Shit was developed in the 1890's by the US Navy. The undergarments separately bifurcated and developed seperatly. And by 1950's tight undergarments were being worn AS T Shirts. Edit: QUOTE "The first manufactured t-shirt was invented between the Spanish-American War in 1898, and 1913 when the U.S. Navy began issuing them as standard ..." This is not a hill I wish to die on - Im not a fashion historian and I don't like T Shirts LOL. But the literature of the period made the connection between the Kimono the US navy the T Shirt and the Block pattern, this could be the fantasy of the author's mind...
