I LIVE IN A COMMI BLOCK in Bulgaria - it has a wind catcher on the roof for passive cooling in the 40c summers - its VERY effective. A giant scoop catches the wind and funnels it down to the bottom of the building, it then cools and comes up the service riser with the cold water pipes and out a vent in the centre of the apartment. Large metal plates over greats outside regulate the pressure - too much wint they lift up. This is not normal for commi blocks - I think it was experimental. BUT IT WORKS ---> Our apartment block has 90 apartments maybe 15 have AC units - most blocks that would be 70 with AC units.

HERE IN BULGARIA Eng. has the same status as Dr. and they are referred to as say "Engineer Karchev" [EDIT] they are also required to study philosophy as part of their education, as their purpose is to serve mankind, therefore they must understand the problems of mankind.

@Abby_Liu - this is the only one I know of with one. But it definitely works - even if I had AC I would maybe use it for 1 month instead of 5 months as a result of the windcatcher. They definitely should be much more prevalent.

@ravenrock541 That is kinda what ours does in a really basic way "A giant scoop catches the wind and funnels it down to the bottom of the building, it then cools and comes up the service riser with the cold water pipes and out a vent in the centre of the apartment. Large metal plates over greats outside regulate the pressure - too much they lift up." So there is higher pressure cool air in the water riser in the centre of the building - open a window and it rushes out the great into the apartment. The outside regulator greats are rusted up - it would probably work a lot better if these were working. The main point is - its incredibly cheap to build and cost ZERO to run

I live in an Eastern European city now - just as cars were becoming more popular here the climatic and social problems they cause was well knows so the mayor of the city did the exact opposite. He cut the existing 4 lane roads down to two, giving one to busses and one to cyclists, bought lots of brand new air conditioned busses, made the city centre parking more pre hour than a bus ride and BINGO - we have an AMAZING public transport system so good that I gave my car away 6 months ago as it had become effectively abandoned...

@aribier Sadly I know very little about the building - it was the Bulgarian Navy officer's accommodation block in the socialist times - the navy still owns the top floor, which is causing issues with the modernisation and renovation as I think the top floor is still classified, despite being full of nothing but pigeons. Architecturally its not a great building, but it is novel. The bathrooms are where the air comes out and they are in the centre of the block, I THINK they were designed as fire safety cells. If the apartment were on fire you would have clean air and water, and all walls are thick solid concrete, even if part of the building collapsed this would be the core that was left standing. Im presuming when you have a lot of valuable people in a building you put effort into their safety!?!?!? There is the obligatory nuclear bunker in the basement - but they all have that here. GOOD LUCK...!!!

@aribier No problem - have you seen the Bus Stops of the USSR...??? They used to let young architects go wild on the bus stop design... They are AMAZINg.

I WAS HORRIFIED TO REALIZE a few years ago that I had changed and would defiantly not kill someone in battle, the reason it horrified me is by implication I previously would have...

THAT WAS ABOUT 100X more interesting than I expected it would be...!

IVE GOT AN IDEA why dont we stop allowing cowardly politicians to send decent men to kill other decent men sent by THEIT cowardly politicians...??? Its just a thought, I know its crazy, but have a think about it...

And that surprises anyone???

@cmck17 - I was just thinking after I posted. All the engineers I know are in their 30's or 40's or 50's - I wonder if they still do teach philosophy as part of engineering...??? I hope so.

A CICADA is a grubs way of making another grub... We have it the wrong way around. Like a chicken is an eggs way of making another egg - humans fixate on their bit of the lifecycle they interact with and assume its the important bit.

YES LANGUAGE ALTERS PERCEPTION There is no such thing as BROWN. You only SEE brown cos we have a word for it. It is dark orange. And if you start calling it dark orange whenever you see it - in about 3 to 6 months you will STOP seeing brown. I tried it, it works, its freaky. My mahogany desk I am using is very clearly dark orange...
