TO BE FAIR everything is mouldy in Huddersfield - that's just the climate; it's why they manufacture the worlds best wool cloth there, the damp in the sandstone brickwork of the mills keeps the wool at the perfect level of flexibility to be woven. They even put the bolts of cloth in old mill-damp rooms to relax and settle before they deliver it

I live in Bulgaria now - the high streets are booming. NO Amazon, No uber, the cities have invested very heavily in making the high streets profitable places to do business. it does not happen by magic, it happens by planning and money. My city is Burgas in Bulgaria you can look it up and there are walking tours on YouTube - the streets are always full of people.

@richard3004 - Even damper I believe - that's why you guys have cotton on that side of the Pennines cos the cotton thread does not snap, and we had / have [small amount] wool. I remember the sound of the old shuttle looms in the sheds when I was a kid in the 1970's. all gone now, and the very few that remain make some of the most expensive cloth in the world. And it is so different - I work with a lot of vintage cloth. Im wearing a pair of trousers made out of 100 year old worsted, you simply cant not buy cloth like this today.

@jobbingactor I live in Burgas - if you look it you there is a T shape in the water - as you look at the coast I am just to the left of that T. My rent is £130 a month on a good sized 1 bedroomed apartment - 5 rooms total 2 balconies. What is it like - VERY different to the UK but I love it. If you come here want to be a Brit abroad like they are in Spain, you will NOT like it. I live in an apartment block ofg 85 families and I have NEVER felt more like I live in a village than I do here - and I moved from an actual village in the UK. Its a 15 minute city so everything I want is in walking distance, I have to go to the centre about once a month.

There is a waiting list for a shop in the centre - people are renovating old communist-era shops on the outskirts and opening them...!!! You might get an interview with the Mayor as to how he has achieved this ---!--- Its 2024 in Bulgaria so why the difference? POLICY

JUMP ON A PLANE and come to Burgas in Bulgaria and have a look at what a thriving city centre looks like - what a thriving high streets look like - and what they do differently here In the middle of the pandemic lockdown - we STILL had new shops opening in the centre, You can probably get an interview with the Mayor Dimitar Nikolov, he just won his 4th term and he is a great guy - he speaks perfect English.

IM FROM LEEDS - LIVED IN BULGARIA FOR 15 YEARS over here the high streets are BOOMING - why...? 1) Cheap rents 2) Cheap taxes and rates 3) a big one - NO AMAZON 4) they don't pathologically police the activity, if the shop wants to put a table out or good ont he pavement - unless they don't take the P they allow it 5) culturally they are BRILLIANT at shop fit - they spend money on good looking shops 6) PRIDE - every shop washes the front and sweeps the street EVERY morning --> 7) shops will always split a 5 pack of razers or any other multi-pack and sell you ONE at 1/5th the price, so poor people don't pay a premium, so poor people USE the shops where the supermarkets you have to buy a 5 pack. 8) very few national chains - when everything is the same everywhere, who wants to go...??? 9) Public. transport so cheap its basically FREE - 60p for the day no matter how many busses you get 10) High quality public toilets - Public toilets here are nicer than in most UK 4* hotels 11) Beautiful streets, street art, fountains, plants, etc etc 12) AN ACTIVE DESIRE BACKED UP WITH MONEY TO KEEP THE HIGH STREETS BUSY AS THEY ARE RECOGNISED AS A SOCIAL GOOD...!!! 13) Edit - its really hard for foreign companies to buy up Bulgarian property Shopping in the centre here is a wonderful organic none corporate adventure

@exploringsuffolk - They have not had 14 years of Tory government and 44 years of tory ideology thats why...!!! I live in a working-class suburb of apartment blocks in Burgas - they are taking away all the trash containers and installing underground trash compactors. You put your rubbish in a post box type thing, it falls down and gets mulched and crushed and then the whole thing rises up on hydraulics for the container to be taken away by the truck. There is more investment in my area of town on these alone than most UK towns have had in the last 10 years. The whole city has been changed over to low-energy LED street lighting. The buses are electric and the city has a solar farm to power the buses. The busses cost €1.3 million each. But the city is THRIVING. You cant have a growing economy if yo never spend any money and you cut ever budget...!!!

@newsbender "The UK to start recovering?" you mean - it will, but its a long time off - I wrote this the other day: 38% of all public buildings are past end of life with 3% more every year - thats £1.5 Trillion over the next 10 years - budget £0 Roads - in my sister's tiny North Yorkshire council area they audited the roads - £1.1 Billion to repair them. 636 "councils" in the UK so that’s £700 Billion THEN you have sewage systems - 1 sewer in London cost £5 billion - so what £250 billion Electricity - MOD - Trains - that's going to be £1 trillion This lot comes to about £4 trillion JUST TO REPAIR THE BROKEN STUFF - not to build anything new, not to build any social housing, not to pay for a green transition or an AI revolution making 30% of people redundant, not to sort the NHS ---!--- There will come a point, and not just in the Uk, the U5A as well, where the need for things to WORK outweighs the need to give companies and billionaires tax cuts - not even billionaires want to live in a broken society where nothing functions. People think Am3ric4 is ahead of the UK now, they have overtaken the Uk - this is NOT true. its simply that the path we are all following leads down the hill of collapse and the UK is STILL ahead, the US is 30 years behind on the collapse. BUT reality will have to be faced - Ireland has worked out that they CANT actually have a functioning society and charge global corporations 10% Tax to move there... A reckoning is coming, a realignment of taxation back to the 1950's levens is coming and then recovery can start. If people don't have any money - they cant BUY things.

@michaelhawkins7389 It is part of the European Union. The Leva is pegged to the Euro at 1.956 leva to the €1. After the EU central bank destroyed Greece with enforced austerity other smaller countries said "NOPE - we are NOT having that happen to us - we are keeping our own currency then if we need to we can devalue the currency and get out of a hole" as the UK did in the 1970's Giving up control of the £GBP and adopting the €1 should be the red line for the UK - not out of sentimentality - but it means that Germany and France control your interest rates and central bank.
