AS A EUROPEAN I gave someone a tip yesterday - firstly they had no clue what I was doing, then I said its for all the great service and help over the last 2 years, and then they were utterly astonished and incredibly grateful - telling me how much it meant to them that I noticed. The size of the tip was irrelevant [actually it was about $8] as they get paid a living wage. To me, this is what tips are for, unusually great levels of service as a recognition of that.

@rabidgoon It was set up after slavery, menial jobs would be paid very low basic wages and made up by "tips" - this way black people could be kept on essentially slave wages, white people doing the same job would earn 5 X as much
