I THINK YOU MAY HAVE IT THE WRONG WAR AROUND the "proving you are free or servile" - I think people would want to prove they are servile in most cases - because... 3 days of work a week is INFLATION PROOF and fixed. Whereas if you had to pay 3 pence, in five years you might be paying 5 pence but still only earning 1 penny or 1.5 pence a day. Rent never goes up BELOW wage inflation. It has gone up at 200% of wage inflation over the last 10 years in the UK. >>> My grandmother's house was rent-controlled at inflation each year. She moved into the house in about 1930 and by her death in 2010 it had gone up to £46 a week, £200 a month. For a 3 bedroom, 1930's semi with a HUGE garden that I am sure went back on the market at a rent of £1000 a month. EDIT: Also you are looking at "freedom" through very modern western eyes. Only people in the western democracies bang on endlessly about freedom. You have to be TAUGHT to like and value freedom. I live in Bulgaria now - no one in Eastern Europe has EVER mentioned freedom to me in any context, British and Americans never stop talking about it.

ANYONE FROM YORKSHIRE knows full well what a "THRASHING" is - I had many a good thrashing when I was a kid for being naughty or when I lost a fight. Its a beating, usually a punishment.

You are looking at "freedom" through very modern western eyes Only people in the western democracies bang on endlessly about freedom. You have to be TAUGHT to like and value freedom. I live in Bulgaria now - no one in Eastern Europe has EVER mentioned freedom to me in any context, British and Americans never stop talking about it.

@ModernKnight - I very well may be and I would love you to explain the difference please? I know that people in the UK and the USA almost worship "freedom", its like a god to them. And in the rest of the world its most defiantly less important and in some cases kinda resented.
