BEWARE LOW-QUALITY COTTON AN LINNEN I dont mean garments - I mean fabric - there is a sudden plethora of VERY low quality fabric at $$$$ prices. 100% cotton and Linen but VERY short-staple so it looks and feels great but wears out in no time. A pair of linen shorts I made 3 months ago just needed patching where they had worn through - they should have lasted 20 years. I paid about €35/m. Pull a thread and test the length of the staple - cotton should be 40mm linnen should be 100mm plus.

NEAR ME IS A BRAND NEW EASTERN ORTHODOX CHURCH Ironically the interior of the church gave me a much more direct connection to the people of the past than the old curches do, I got to see the iconography in stunning vivid colour - just as they would have. Not faded by hundreds of years of time. This is very similar - the shining living vibrance is not something you can get from the original garment

  5.  @myrna_m  YEP - you will never get those two shiny tram lines out of the fabric once you have polished it with the iron pressing a seam. No matter how much you brush it or scrape it with the edge of a knife.

  8. PRO TIP - USE A MAHNET AS A STITCH GUIDE [a heavy fridge magnet will do] and stick it to your machine as a stitch guide...!!! Your machine is cast iron - it will stick. A magnet from a small speaker would be ideal as it is round and allows you to manipulated curves past it very easily - this is what they used to use in ye oldy days

  9. I HAVE TRAVELED IN WEST AFRICA the clothing they wear is fantastic - they still wear both traditional as well as modern - both are spectacular... I prefer the traditional which are just works of art. UNUSUALLY the men's clothing is more spectacular than the women.

  15.  @NottaRobot  This is the historically accurate method for [mostly men's] clothing where you have a floating lining - sort off, as I say really the lining should be in 3 parts, the coat in 3 parts, applied to each the coat sewn together, the sleeves mounted, the linings closed, the sleeve linings based in and then everything is felled [stitched] together. Women's clothing tended not to have floating linings, they tended to be flat lined

  16. IM A GUY sat watching this in a "FITTED" waistcoat - to most modern men this would feel like a corset with tiny armholes. ITS NOT - it just fits... It takes a while to get used to things ACTUALLY FITTING. I started making my own historical clothing and I was trying to replicate the "feel" of my modern clothing - oblivious to the fact that fitted clothes actually TOUCH YOUR BODY, and that's not uncomfortable. Modern clothes are uncomfortable even when baggy. This is a very hard concept to explain... Baggy is NOT comfortable.

  17. WHEN WINDING YOUR BOBIN slacken the knurled nut at the centre of the hand wheel and it will disengage the rest of the mechanism..!!! DONT start the machine with the knurled nut - start it by turning the hand wheel forward until the treddle is just past top dead centre and on its way down, then flick the wheel downwards and press the peddle "catching" the spinning motion and then take pressure off as the peddle comes up and over the top, then "catch" it again and press down with the foot. The foot only presses.

  26.  @SlightlyCrunchyMama  I love when Americans have 3,809,525 square miles to live in and only 6% of it is urbanised you all chose to live in the least habitable parts like swamps, deserts, and mountains. And then give the climate and geography as the reason you cant live without dryers, airconditioning, giant trucks,. Find a bit with a moderate climate and build some walkable cities for the love of God.

  37. FOR MEDICAL REASONS I COULD NOT SHOWER* for about 18 months - I scrubbed my skin with a stiff pig bristle brush head to toe and just washed the smelly bits... Honestly, it works absolutely fine as is a totally viable alternative to showering. *I was getting 3 showers a day in very hard water and I developed a sensitivity to the water. I get a freezing cold quick shower now - but no soap for 10 years

  38. ACCESSORIES You can get Zig Zag stitch accessories for these machines - they wiggle the fabric not the needle. You can ALSO get BUTTONHOLE attachments and they are actually RALLY GOOD, they do a lovely button hole.

ITS REALLY FUNNY watching you getting used to the treddle action - I grew up using a treadle machine form the age of about 9 TIP - you are NOT running the machine with your foot back forth back forth, you are just ADDING a bit of energy to the machine each stitch to keep it running. So its much more of a PRESS to get it going and then, little push, little push with the toes - the pedal will rise up on its own, then just little push as it goes back down.

  40. IMPORTANT NOTE do not add horse hair canvas and pad stitching to a waistcoat IF you intend to wear it under a jacket...!!! A true waistcoat should have no inner structure as it has to lie flat under a jacket - it will look idiotic with a rolled collar - how do I know? I've done it.
