Largely tradition. If somewhere is known as the hub it tends to be front of mind. There was no real reason for London being the financial centre - but it was, so p[people went there to work, so it had the best people, so it was the financial centre. After WW2 the UK had MASSES of very late intact runways - the rest of Europe didn't, they had been bombed to pieces... It was mostly just a hang over of that and the fact that English is the language of international trade.
