Here in Bulgaria, EVERYTHING is a flat rate 10%. Income tax, capital gains tax, wealth, inheritance, gifts. It sounds crazy low, but what it means is that the very rich actually pay about 2 X what they do in the UK and the USA. And its super cheap to collect - there is no point paying an expensive accountant to move things about cos its STILL 10%. They then give money back to the very low income with food vouchers. It WILL have to rise and people are expecting more and nurses and teachers are not paid A LOT OF MONEY to "honour their value to society" [A nurse here can buy a 1 bed apartment on 1 years salary] but its amazing how much you collect this way.

@carolinecollett956 - Utter rubbish - I live in Bulgaria, We are 50 miles from Ukrain, and my electricity has not gone up 1 penny in 2 years. Bulgaria is on the "to invade" list and we have a Russian oil pipeline directly into my city. THIS is the BS the UK govt are trying to push on you. This is BREXIT. The only things that have gone up in our country is dairy products cos we have to import those and a lot came from the UK before. Meat has dropped 15% in the last 6 months.

Its not the world supply - its Brexit they are lying to you...!!! I live in Bulgaria - I checked yesterday, my electricity price has not changed in the last 2 years. the odd thing is going up here - like butter. but the cost of meat has cone down 15% in the last 6 months.

@carolinecollett956 - Did I misunderstand you - were you initially talking about the price increases in Bulgaria OR in the UK when you said " it is about the price of oil and the uncertainty of war in Europe regarding Ukraine and Russia that is impacting us" Cos yes that is true of Bulgaria, but not true of the UK.

@carolinecollett956 This "war" mostly exists in the minds of the people in the US and the UK government as a nice distraction from their problems at home. Russia will not invade in February - the sun is out, its 15ºC today. Russia supplies 30% of the EU's gas in winter, in summer that drops to nearly zero. Russias power and influence is in WINTER. If Russia are going to invade it will be in November when they can dictate to the EU what the EU response will be. Im very sorry you live in poverty, I genuinely am. I grew up in the UK in extreme poverty in the 1980 - I thought the UK had left this behind - but Tory government can be relied upon to bring it back. But rest assured, no one over here is worried about Russia invading. We are more worried about the UK and the USA talking Europe into war in their desperate attempt to distract from cakes and failed agendas...

@carolinecollett956 - As for the electricity situation here - Bulgaria is a large exporter of energy, so it is shielded domestically from the rise in prices as they make more money on the exports so which offsets the domestic costs. However, this is the same for the UK. The companies charging a fortune to consumers are making million per hour on the wholesale side cos the price is so high. the difference here and in France is REGULATION. So far the companies here and in France [and some other EU countries] have not been allowed to profit at both ends of the equation - you make massive wholesale profits - you use that to subsidise the domestic prices - the UK has just allowed the companies to keep the massive profits and pass the costs onto the consumer as well. You say you are a Brexit supporter - THIS is what you voted for. THIS is Brexit. The new government in Bulgaria has been hard fought for because the previous one was corrupt - not as corrupt as the Tories, but very amateurish corrupt. There will be changes, I have no idea what they will be...

@carolinecollett956 We will have to agree to disagree on Europe. But it is nice to have a respectful conversation. I wish you well.

@Nine-Signs - POSSIBLY THE DUMBEST COMMEN EVER ON YOUTUBE. The top 10% in the UK own 80% of the nation's wealth. And OF COURSE its less even than under communism - THATS LITERALLY THE POINT OF COMMUNISM - ITS THE FOUNDING PRINCIPLE OF COMMUNISM Bulgaria does NOT have anything like the worst wealth disparity in Europe - 85% of people own their own home with no mortgage...!!! 65% own a 2nd home in the country with no mortgage. I mean I will agree with you that ending communism was one of the worst things to happen to the country - so would 75% of the people here that lived UNDER communism and just voted in the recent election to go back to it. EDIT: I think your heart is in the right place but your argument is dumb AF. The 10% tax taxes the ultra-wealthy at 2 to 3 X what the UK and the USA do. The income disparity has NOTHING to do with tax cos the rates published by all countries are PRE TAX rates. In the UK and the USA the WEALTH TAX is ZERO %%% - and that is where the vast majority of rich people money is made.
