And unlike a mine exploding under water - that easily punctures a hole in the ship because water is NOT compressible - air IS compressible, so the bigger you make the explosion the MORE you simply lift the earth UP. Look for the Lochnagar mine from WW1 - that was 60,000 lb (27 tonne) of explosive exploded 25m under ground and it made a crater 90m deep but that's to the edge of the crater, from ground level its only maybe 50m. So paradoxically the bigger you make the payload the less penetration you get, the pressure pushes against the bedrock to lift the earth into the sky and doing that RELEASES the pressure.
