I LIVE IN BURGAS BULGARIA Google it - this is what a poor European city looks like. Google "Burgas city center" google "Burgas Sea Gardens". We also have free healthcare, flat rate subsidized public transport [70 cents a ride], free city wide Wifi, everything is walkable, and everywhere is busy and thriving. And this is in the POOREST country in the EU - not the richest.

@ericpmoss - Following on from my last comment - having thought about it. I think Americans find it so hard to separate themselves from the nation because America is not a country, it's an idea. Unless everyone keeps believing in the idea, the idea ceases to be a thing and America ceases to exist. Its like paper currency - it has value cos everyone believes it has value. Gold has intrinsic value, you don't have to keep believing in it for it to have value. America is like paper money, its relatively new and you have to believe in it. The rest of the world is like Gold, its been around forever and it does not require YOU to believe in it. Americans are participants in the idea of America, Germans are people who live on a bit of land called Germany. Same as the Brits, same as the Japanese. IMO - this is why Americans find it so hard to accept or partake in criticism of the country. If you are criticising America you are criticising the idea, if you are criticising the idea, what's the point in believing in the idea if its a bad idea, and the idea is the only thing America is built upon. I think Gen Z see it differently as they see themselves as people on earth, they have friends all over the planet and they have way less attachment to their nation-state. Ill have to research this more thoroughly.

@comsartoo1722 - My city in Eastern Europe has not banned cars, but you really have to be dedicated to use a car. The but is a flat rate of €0.75 cents no matter how far you go. Parking is €1 an hour and there is very little parking. The bus has separate lanes and the light switch to allow them to pass, the cars are squashed into one lane so a 15-minute ride on the bus takes 30 mins in a car. The busses are new, air-conditioned and clean, they have conductors to take the money and help you with bags etc. The bus runs every 5 to 7 minutes from the outskirts to the center. Its enough to get 80% or more of people out of their car, car ownership is going up, but mostly they are used at the weekend to go to the villages - most families here [65%] own a 2nd home in a village because of "evil communism".

@ericpmoss In Bulgaria the mayor has a LOT of power, to if they want to ruin a city they can, equally if they want to build a great city they have the power and resources to do so.

@ericpmoss Your comment is interesting - of all the people of the earth I find that Americans find it the hardest to separate themselves from the nation, or from other Americans. Which is weird in a nation so obsessed with individualism. Germans are people born in Germany. Chinese are people born in China. But Americans are Americans born in America like they should be is very much the feeling I get.

When I moved here vans were really expensive in the Uk do I bought an old American Lincoln town Car stretched limo and filled it with everything I owned and my cat. I drove from England to Bulgaria Via Italy and Greece in a 10m long limo - it took me 11 days LOL. I literally never take it for granted how lucky I am - I live in the tallest apartment block in the city and my view is over the sea. I do tai chi on the balcony every morning and the sun rises and i mean it I NEVER take it for granted.

@pokerilaama8864 The free wifi is not super fast, but it is free. You would not want to use it every day - but its a great backup. And a correction on the busses - there is a time limit - its not technically ALL DAY. Its as many busses as you want to use provided there is not more than [i think] 2 hours between them. So if you got to work on 3 busses that 70c if you then work 8 hours and get 3 busses home that is another 70c. As I only every go shopping its never applied to me. The idea is everyone pays 70c to get to work, you are not disadvantaged if its long way.

@StephenButlerOne YES capitalism is a funnel - it funnels money and therefore power to the top. Unless you tax that and put it back to the bottom the system runs out of money, which happened - so they invented quantitive easing. Printing money to keep the system functioning. But the system is broken - all the money and power is so vested in the top you can do nothing.

@GrandmaCathy - I found out that oil companies provide textbooks and worksheets for your schools yesterday. THAT sounds like a good idea with no possible down sides at all...
