WHAT IS YOUR VIEW OF GORBACHEV TIM..? As a good little western capitalist, I was astonished to discover when I moved to Bulgaria that most people hate him. Then I described the unbelievable horrors they endured in the 20 years after communism. Today a western historian pointed out "He took over a country with some problems and in 6 years it had completely collapsed economically, socially, and politically. He is the worst leader in modern history" I was unaware of people in the west having anything but glowing praise for him - Id be interested in your views.

@ProfessorTimWilson "the real catastrophe that followed the collapse of Communism was not of his making " Hmmmm I think it's hard to say it's not your fault if you fail at something and the consequences after that are horrific. If I fail to take a corner in my car and cause another car to swerve to avoid me and it hits an oncoming SUV I can hardly say I was not responsible for the damage to the SUV. Actions and consequences and failures more so. AND I am shocked to find out you have been defaming Masha and the Bear, how could you Tim, my favourite Russian cartoon...

@huwzebediahthomas9193 - I learned an amazing story about how Yeltsin ended up getting to be leader and even THAT is Gorbachev's fault. Yeltsin tried to commit suicide by stabbing himself with a pair of scissors - she failed and was taken to hospital. Gorby had him brought out of hospital whilst he was drugged up on pain killers and ordered a "ritual humiliation" in front of the Pollet Beau. This is apparently what set Yeltsin to the task of overthrowing Gorby.

@huwzebediahthomas9193 - And it was to protect these interests that Putin was brought in by Yeltsin, which led to Putin being in a position to run for leader...

@mossychops - There is one thing I agree with Putin on. The fall of the USSR is one of the great tragedies of history. I trace the excesses of late-stage capitalism - Zero hour contracts, fire and re-hire etc etc to the collapse of the USSR. No communism, no need to even pretend to be nice to the workers. What are they going to do - turn communist??? Dialectics - the pull of opposite forces. If you remove communism capitalism can run amock with its horrors.
