NICE FROCK COAT / MORNING COAT I could not quite see which it was - but very nice...!!! I just finished making my first Frock Coat last week - 100 hours of work - I can see why people dont wear them very much these days LOL

@greatunwashed1856 - Im a self-employed author. But my hobby is making men's bespoke historical clothing 1890 to 1940 😀

@greatunwashed1856 - OH WOW and thank you!!! I did the frock coat in an oatmeal herringbone tweed - it is from a fashion plate, so they did one make them. But its to hide the imperfections really, way more forgiving than flat black. Even so its not perfect. It has a padded lining and I could only get synthetic padding here in Bulgaria where I now live, this is too stiff, you live and learn... Also, I can't get horse hair canvas at the moment, there appears to be a shortage in Europe, so I had to make the fronts out of linen canvas only. I started by making a Frock Overcoat, that was easy and turned out really well. The actual "as close to historically accurate as possible" Frock Coat is a whole different thing. Many hours staring at close-up pictures of extant examples to see the construction process... It appears that making up - fitting - tearing down is unavoidable as to the best of my reckoning you make an entire left and right including lining and sleeves and then join and close the back up. If you have any info on this I would be very grateful!?!?!? Which company did you apprentice at? I know most of the Savile Row companies as I watch a lot of tailoring videos.

@greatunwashed1856 - OH I know Anderson and Shepherd, I watch Tom Mahon's channel he used to work there and obviously they developed the drape cut, which is incredibly similar to the cuts in the historical books I work from, except A&S use a very minimal canvas don't they, cut on the bias if I remember correctly. If I am making a 2 or 3-piece suit I make the coat as you say [fronts (foreparts) then put the completed back on , then shoulders,under collar,top collar, finally sleeves,] but looking at the pictures of the old frock coats and my trial and error you have to mount the sleaves before you put the padded lining in... A suit is a long list of quite simple tasks. Learn to sew a welted pocket, learn to sew a patch pocket, learn to mount a sleeve, learn to press a seam. I started off by making a hat that didn't fit, then a hat that fit, then a pair of trousers, then a waistcoat, then a coat, now a Frock Coat... Its taken me about 4 years. I would LOVE to do an apprenticeship, the lack of someone to ask is the big problem I have...
