I would say the Tory's motives for privatisation were a pathological hatred of nationalised industries and a love of personally profiting from anything they possibly can. Combines with the chance to literally buy the next general election by selling off nationalised industries at pennies on the £ to middle-class voters who made an instant killing on the share options... Re taxation - I subscribe to the "Modern Economic Theory" actually that taxation if the removal and destruction of money in order to prevent inflation and give the currency value. That national debt is utterly irrelevant as long as it is in your own currency and that 100% of government expenditure is discretionary, you simply print the money. Then at the other end, you collect it in taxes and destroy it... But the average Tory voter, I believe, still sees the economy in terms of the household budget. In the way Thatcher told them to... As you said. "Truss's motive is that many Tories saw Johnson as getting them to pay for his political power base among working class 2019 voters and resented it."
