@peterdockrill9653 - I researched it a little, including the history of it, for a book Ive just finished writing. its all a giant con as far as I can tell... Any country that has national debt in its own currency is just giving money to rich people for no reason. Dont borrow it - just print it. The source is irrelevant - only the spending of it has any effect. And 100% of govt spending is discretionary, a govt can afford anything it wants, it just has to control inflation -so it decides what it wants, prints the money and then collects taxes in order to destroy the money to invest value in the paper and keep inflation under control... Even inflation is a crap reason to not print money cos you are the government - just introduce price controls. I live in Bulgaria - 10% flat rate tax, 24% of GDP as debt yet we have 4 X the hospitals the UK has and way better education, no homeless people and new infrastructure. Yes the EU has contributed, but even so these seem like strange numbers that tories would tell you are lies -cant have that... National economics is just a giant confidence trick whilst you shovel money to rich people.
