As an author on the collapse of civilizations I would argue the cause and effect are the wrong way around in your statement. IMO - nationalism is the desperate clinging to the past greatness of a collapsing civilisation / nation. It is a symptom of the collapse not the initiator. This is the list of contributing factors to societal collapse: Plague / disease Y Environmental change Y Massive wealth inequality Y Loss of the administrative class Y The government stops governing Y Attack from the outside - now includes cyber attack Y Loss of faith in the political system Y Economic collapse Y Exposed obvious corruption Y Crumbling infrastructure Y Mismanagement of a crisis Y Societal division Y Loss of belief in the unity of the society Y Restriction of international trade / loss of trade agreements Y Increased isolationism Y Rising internal violence Y Excessive spending on military / arms race N Inability to maintain the currency - hoarding / devaluation / hyper inflation N If a majority of things on the list happen to a civilisation simultaneously, it is invariably the end for that civilisation. If all happen at the same time, it's guaranteed to be the end. The USSR collapsed with 9 out of the 18. The UK right now scores 16/18

@DavidMoxham957 - Well the thing is "has the UK reached 'cascading systems failure'"? That is the point where you can FIX anything, cos the things you need to fix them are also broken. The USA defiantly has - the USA is doomed, and I think Joe Biden knows this. I think he is trying to manage the decline. I think the answer is - if Boris Johnson if PM YES, the UK is utterly doomed to collapse. IF he is changing for someone even half way competent then NO. This is why Bojo terrifies me, cos not only is he astonishingly incompetent, he is also a wannabe dictator. so getting him out could be incredibly difficult - even if the Tory party decide they have had enough of him - he may well have dug himself in like a tick...

@markwilkie3677 - I truly feel Scotland needs to sever the ties with England. The Scottish vision of the future is diametrically opposed to that of England. Its not just different - they are mutually exclusive.

@DavidMoxham957 - If you are interested their is a great book called "the fourth turning" that explains the cyclic nature of history over a long human life of about 80 to 100 years. And the USA is due a collapse / war. It was written in 1997 and was very accurate at predicting the last 10 years... If by Porkies you mean Boris Johnsons - don't stress, he is a narcissist. They are amazingly charismatic and plausible. My first book was about MY experience with a narcissist. Ny next two were explanations of narcissism and recovery from narcissistic abuse and for the last 18 months, I have been researching/writing this book on the collapse of the USA / how to cope with it. I had the book nearly finished when I realised it was just unbelievably depressing - it just kinda said "your all screwed" LOL. So I decided to re write it as a guide on how to cope with the collapse cos I feered people would kill themselves after reading the reality of the situation in the USA. ANYWAY - very long way of saying - I absolutely understand how people could find Bojo incredibly convincing - its what narcissists do - they con people.

@domhart9046 - The Scottish are just a DIFFERENT people. The Scottish see their future IN the future. The English see their future as recreating the past. The Scottish are fiercely patriotic in a positive way, loving their history and traditions and wanting people to come and share it, experience it, and add to it. The English have toxic patriotism, banging a drum and hating foreigners. The Scottish believe everyone is part of society, the English believe successful people are part of society. I have said a few times that I am seriously thinking about moving to the west coast of Scotland - I have had many MANY people tel me I would be very welcome. I have had 2 English people today tell me if I don't like it in England to F-off... I spend quite a bit of time in Scotland 20 years ago and even then I felt it was a DIFFERENT country. Different landscapes and people with different values.

@berosmith9041 - I would define that as "national solidarity" rather than nationalism... I think there is something inherently toxic about "nationalism".

@stephenthomas3085 - I absolutely agree! But as you say this is really a post WW2 thing and Im looking at 3,000 years. And I would include that in attack from the outside as a general term...
