TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY they are just putting the finishing touches to a BRAND NEW HOSPITAL literally next door to me here in Bulgaria... Not built cos the old one is falling down - just cos the population in this city has increased so another hospital was needed - to add to the 27 we have in this city YES - here they build lots of small distributed hospitals - cos that's CONVENIENT for the people. Same with schools - all in walking distance.

@rotwang2000 - Its really weird over here - when you buy or rent an apartment they list the walking time to all the amenities. So lik Bus stop 3 mins Hospital 7 mins Shops 4 mins Doctors 11 mins Council office 2 mins Schools 6 mins [scools are grouped together infant, junior and high so the older kids can walk the younger ones to school] I thought it was the weirdest thing when I moved here - not is the most common sense thing in the world. But we are SO used to everything being centralised to save costs, it seems weird to us

MY SISTER IGNORED a leaking gutter for 3 years - all the plater fell off the bedroom wall this summer You save £50 on maintenance it costs you £1500

@MattTheSpratt - Honestly - I would NOT bank on them being connected with each other with IT. Its a weird country. For starters we have the 2nd fastest internet i the world - I have 500Mbps for £8 a month. BUT... the government and the banks and things are NOT very "on line" Almost everyone - me included - pays their household bills cash at an office. 90% of payments are cash. If you order things on line - its cash on delivery - they take the money off you when they deliver the goods... There is an inherent suspicion in this country of "ON LINE". so the hospitals are probably more likely to print off and give you your documents and YOU keep them than to have centralised databases. They have the technology and the infrastructure - its just a cultural thing. I think it comes from the communist days, there is a natural mistrust of the government having your data... Probably not misplaced either.

@pauls3204 - the house is from the 1730's it has these weird old eves and dormer windows so its not high, but you cant reach half of it you need scaffolding so it never got done. They started to get a bit of mould, so eventually, they had it done. Then the hot summer and it dried the wall out for the first time in 3 years and as the walls have no cavity it just sucked every last bit of moisture out and the plaster in the kid's bedroom fell off and when you press whats left it all moves in that "no longer stuck to the wall" way... They need a long term solution cos the walls just let every drop of heat straight out and - but the damn thing is listed so they cant clad it...

@rocketsurgeon2135 "I just hardly ever needed to go anywhere by car, I finally cracked and sold it." I kept my car for 3 years. The tires had gone flat and the battery was flat and the parking brake was seized on, but my British mind kinda still felt that to NOT have a car was somehow intolerable. Finally the council put a note on it saying "we have deemed this to be abandoned, unless you move it we will scrap it" it was actually quite a good Mercedes, so I gave it to a friend of a friend and all it has done is save me the insurance and the tax... Like you, I walk, I use public transport, i occasionally use a taxi, very occasionally I rent a car. It all costs me less than the insurance used to. And I realised that one of the things that keeps people poor is having to run a car...!!! They are REALLY expensive.

@rocketsurgeon2135 "As they say, it's expensive to be poor" this is one of the bug bears of my life. The story is too long to go into here, but I have always shopped in vast bulk for things like washing powder due to childhood trauma over this exact issue. What I do like about Bulgaria is the shop will sell you ONE razer blade for 14p or ONE tide pod or ONE paracetamol and its the same pro rata price as the full pack. Society here is geared up to INCLUDE poor people and I really like that. It is considered a LITERAL sin against God to throw food away. I had one soggy tomato this morning - I put it in a clear plastic bag, tied it up and put it on the wall out side. Thats just what you do here - you never throw food away. You package it up and put it our for people less fortunate. Being poor is not a crime here.
