Here in Bulgaria the first thing the [useless] government did was get the old USSR era pandemic manual off the shelf and implement it. That meant police enforced super severe lockdowns. When you guys had 40k cases a day we were having 10 or 20 THEN the government got cocky and switched to the "lets not over top the hospitals" model and 18,000 people died in a country of 6 million. The thing was - there were not protests or anti-mask movements here - everyone did exactly what they were told, they could have literally irradiated it in this country and just kept the borders closed. They switched back to a tougher model and got it back under control - but they killed 18k people that did not need to die. BTW - the USSR pandemic plan was brilliant. No messing about talking about what works and what does not - just blanket measures, foot baths at every shop doorway, washing the streets with disinfectant on a night, police roadblocks no inter town travel. And it WORKED.

@atomiccritter6492 - the people here have a VERY strong sense of community. NO ONE is told they are special or unique. Your value is your value to society. My friend who has an electrical engineering degree told me she had to do philosophy as part of the degree. When she complained she was told "how will you be any good to society as an electrical engineer if you don't understand the problems you are trying to solve...?" THAT sums up the difference in thinking for me.
