@erikziak1249 "highly interested in transit systems" this is literally the most autistic thing anyone can say LOL. Its almost a Meme for autism.
Im 52 I was only diagnosed very recently. "But I am 42, work in the IT sector even though I never learned it formally." Being and auto-diadact is also another common sign. I bet you "collect facts" like other people collect baseball cards or pokemon and learning a new fact is just the best thing ever? You can literally get emotional over the way a maths problem is solved or the way a tree grows as a fractal or similar thing.
I was literally bored and watched a YouTube video on "actually autistic tic toks" after 5 minutes i was like OH MY GOD I DO THAT [what they call T Rex arms] and other things - then I took the 50-question AQ test on "embrace-autism" where I scored 42 / 50 - which no surprise is high. So being me I took every other test on line and then organised all the results into a spreadsheet - shortly after my friend dragged me to the psychology hospital cos she was sick of me talking about it, where they looked at the results and said "why are you here - yo have the result already".
Is it worth getting a diagnosis - YES. Not a formal one - just do the online tests and watch videos - cos if it is you, there are things you can do to make your life easier. You might find your depression is lessened if you wear noise-canceling headphones all day, or have a squishy silicone ball to play with, or one of a million other things these kids on Tic Tok can teach you.
Here is a random tic tok compilation - https://youtu.be/Mp1KJAXe57Q
I mean I totally take it as a badge of honour, autistic people drive innovation and human progress...
Please let me know - Id be really interested if you explore it further.
Other common signs, noticing nasty textures of things, being sensitive to bright light, buzzing lights etc annoy you, you can tel when an incandescent light bulb is about to blow from the sound, you can hear the buzzing of an electric toaster, you see patterns in things that are so obvious you have no idea why others can not see them, you life is significantly better with routines.

@erikziak1249 - "If I hate something about mathematics, it is the way it is being taught at schools. " I totally agree - I hated it at school - this video almost made me cry its so beautiful https://youtu.be/ovJcsL7vyrk [its wide screen landscape format LOL]
"factual literature, searched and read a lot of research papers on particle physics, psychology, behavioral evolution of humans, technology, metallurgy, machinery. " these are all subjects of great interest to me
"I am pretty sure that if asked them to, many would be capable of seeing patterns too. " Have you ever asked them? I have, usually they have no idea why there is a pattern and Im not saying they are stupid, my sister has a Msc in Nutrition but she cant see a pattern in a pavement lOL
"But one thing that I am very sensitive to is smell. I literally hate all perfumes and strong ones make me want to throw up." Candle shops and perfume shops make me want to throw up as I walk past them
"I rather drown myself in CH3-CH2-OH. That has the added benefit of making me sleepy and think a lot less." I too used to use alcohol to shut my brain up so I could sleep- i became a raging alcoholic because of it. 20 years on I have learned enough about myself to know that my life is SIGNIFICANTLY better if I live a very minimalist life with few possessions, very little clutter in my life, a daily routine, get up at sunrise and go to bed early, lots of walks each day, dont feed my brain with too many visual stimulants, read books, tia chi and meditation. Its NOT the life I crave, I like a high input exiting life - but its bad for me. It makes my brain way too active and then I cant sleep so I use chemicals to stop it and the downward spiral starts.
I enforce a calm and balanced life of routine upon my self and my overall life is way WAY better.
I would definitely try the AQ test on the embrace-autism site.
The thing that it allows is you to access areas of help yourself that you never thought of. I used to have a compulsion to comment on videos if I knew a fact. I did not even want people to reply as I also had a compulsion to rely to them and it wasted hours of my day. It drove me crazy for years. After discovering I was autistic I got some "stim toys" - one of them a soft silicone ball with a furry surface I love squashing and squeezing - on the days I do this is completely stops my need to comment or to reply to comments.
Many of these things are not linear - you may find a totally random thing you never thought about helps your over-sensitivity to smell, or another thing in your life that annoys you.
EDIT: If you take the AQ test - here is a tip. DONT answer the questions quickly with your "learned behaviour" answers. Take a second to think "what would i do naturally if there were not social pressures. For example - one of the questions is "Do you repeat things said on the TV or other people say? I replied NO - of course not.
Actually, I do it ALL the time, but I mask it by repeating it as a question, of "OH - XYZ - Thats interesting"
Hundreds of my behaviours are learned behaviours to make me socially acceptable, and I had a 25-year career as a successful salesperson and sales coach, so I have no issues with interacting with people - but its nearly ALL LEARNED BEHAVIOUR. I thought that was "growing up" - learning how to human. Turns out - to most people that comes naturally LOL
A life long study of psychology and anthropology and 2 books I've written on psychology later I discover I was actually learning how to be a human.
